Help Needed: Thanks to Steven Ball we have been given a pipe organ on loan for our use, which Fr. Kelley has given us permission to have placed in the church. Pertaining to the small Italian organ: It will be packed at the Cathedral and moved to St. Edmond's on the Friday, September 11th.

We need help loading & unloading the truck on Friday, September 11. I would like to request the assistance of at least 4 volunteers to meet at the Cathedral at approximately 9 AM to help load the organ there, and proceed to help unload the organ at St. Edmond's. My GUESS is that the total time commitment would be 4 hours. All other arrangements have been made, and there should be no further expense to the parish.

Welcome to St. Edmond Church

For your information:

To get to the restroom, one enters the door to the right of St Joseph's altar (there is a sign that says restroom), and proceed through the wooden door. The restroom is on the LEFT.

The parking lot is behind the rectory, and the rectory is attached to the back of the Church. We can use the reserved spaces if necessary.

At St. Edmond Church, there is a ramp for use by anyone who has difficulty with steps. It is on the east side (observer's left).

There is no rail, so we will be using the modesty panel in the front. Please look to the ushers for direction.

Please be patient as we all adjust to our new home.

Sung Vespers: As was mentioned last week, St. Mary's Student Schola from Norwalk, CT will sing (Tridentine) Vespers on Saturday evening at 4pm in Holy Trinity Church. The doors will be open at 3:15pm. Sung vespers takes about 40 minutes. Mr. Corvaia is working on attaining parking relaxation for us. A couple of things:

Expenses are the standard ones: Rent, musicians, supplies, priest and sacristan stipends as well as administrative fees. There was an extra administrative cost for the newspaper ads for Holy Week, about $375. Overall, the deficit is going in the right direction, and if you do not include the Triduum, we would be in the black for this month. Because of the added expense of the Solemn Mass for the Ascension, there may be a slight deficit in May 2015. It is my hope and expectation that our finances will improve and that we will be without a deficit by the end of June of this year. On many fronts, I see light at the end of the tunnel. Important Message from Rev. Fr. Harold McKale

I have what I believe is good news to share with you today. As I stated back in July when I took over the administrative responsibilities from Fr. Ron Check, I mentioned how important the Latin Mass is to me and that I would do everything in my power to promote and strengthen its presence for you in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

Back in July 2014, Fr. Check was considering a move. I also believe that it is in our best interest for a variety of reasons such as an ability to use all liturgical options, improve parking availability and have access to facilities for social and other events before or after Mass.

It pleases me to announce that a new home has been found for us. Now no place is perfect, and each has its positive aspects as well as challenges. It is my firm belief that this move is in the best interest of our long-term growth, So I offer the negatives first then the positives:

- First, our new home does not have a pipe organ; it has an Allen organ; nonetheless, our Music Director, Steven Ball assures me that he can still provide the level of music to which we are all accustomed.

- Secondly, the sanctuary has been changed in the wake of Vatican II; nonetheless, the altar is very beautiful; it is marble and has a praedella for the priest, and has a very workable sanctuary.

On the positive side:

- We would have the ability to make full use of the liturgical options provided by the Church.

- The church has its own parking lot.

- Like Holy Trinity, the church is very fine looking inside and out. It was once known as the Cathedral of South Philadelphia. There is an area which we can utilize for socials and other events.

Here is the plan: I have already spoken to Msgr. DiGirolamo, thanking him for his gracious hospitality these past two years.

It is my intention to send out postcards to anyone for whom I have an address as well as an e-mail.

Our last Mass at Holy Trinity Church will be Sunday, May 31. We will be moving that week, which I leave to John Lilley to coordinate and I am certain he will need your assistance.

On Sunday, June 7, the Feast of the External Solemnity of Corpus Christi, I hope you will join us at St. Edmond Church at 21st & Snyder. Fr. Bartoloma will have the privilege of offering our first Mass there. It is a worship site of St. Monica Parish; the pastor is Fr. Joseph Kelley, and he is very excited to receive us.

Internalional Institute for Culture: The Truth About Pope Pius XII & the Jews During WWII: In 1999, a British journalist named John Cornwell published a book entitled "Hitler's Pope: The Secret History of Pius XII," in which he spuriously claimed that the Pope who led the Church through the troubling period of the Second World War harbored anti-Semitic sentiments and failed to do enough to defend the Jews of Europe from the Nazis. Our lecturer, Professor Rychlak, responded to these criticisms with his own book the following year, "Hitler, the War and the Pope," in which he debunks Cornwell's trumped up case against Pope Pius XII through documentary research that the previous book either overlooked, ignored, or distorted.

Professor Ronald Rychlak is an advisor to the Holy Sees delegation to the United Nations and a member of the Mississippi Advisory Committee to the U.S. Civil Rights Commission. He is on the committee appointed by the Mississippi Supreme Court to revise the states criminal code, and he serves on the editorial board of The Gaming Law Review. He is also on Advisory Boards for the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, Ave Maria School of Law, and the International Solidarity and Human Rights Institute. In 2006 the Society of Catholic Social Scientists awarded him the Blessed Frederic Ozanam Award for Social Action, and in 2007 he was an honoree at the U.S. Holocaust Museum for his work on inter-faith dialogue.

To prepare for the World Meeting of Families and Pope Francis’s visit, we are studying a catechesis on family life called Love is Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive. Chapter 4: Two Become One

Our first three chapters reviewed basic Christian faith. We saw how confidence in Jesus opens the door to faith, enabling us to know God and what God has done in history. God creates male and female in his image, and makes a covenant with Israel and the Church. God is faithful to his promises, even when we sin. Because God loved us in this way, we spend our lives trying to return our love to God and share it with our neighbor. In this month’s chapter and in the chapters to come, we will study the implications of these doctrines for marriage and the family. When husband and wife promise to love each other as God loves us all, they make a commitment to love not only romantically, but also with mercy and forgiveness. Our culture sometimes teaches us to think of marriage as a negotiable contract between two individuals who happen to feel sexual chemistry. This view of love is a recipe for instability, since it is still premised on individualism and the waxing and waning of romantic feelings. The Church’s alternative account of love enables us to transcend the culture of individualism and become who we were created to be. Founded on Christ, sustained in the sacraments, Catholic marriage builds humility and self-sacrifice into the dynamic between male and female. As this month’s chapter explains in more detail, sacramental marriage creates intimate communion even in times of suffering and hardship. "Love is our mission," as our catechism’s title declares, because Christ’s love frees us from false, shrunken accounts of love and makes us fully alive.

Chapter 5: Creating the Future

Sexual intimacy between a man and a woman raises the possibility of children. There are many other honorable relationships which include degrees of commitment and affection, but marriage has a unique mission: to integrate the fertility of male and female with the fidelity of God’s covenant. Catholic parenting relies on the same rationale as sacramental marriage: love in the shape of service, sacrifice, trust, and openness to God’s will. If and when a marriage is blessed with children, love orients parents to their children’s education and spiritual formation. Jesus said to his disciples "Let the children come unto me," and it is the responsibility of all Catholic adults to shepherd children into a relationship with God and the people of God. The whole parish should be involved in supporting marriages, families and children. We build the future of our society child by child, family by family. Vatican II called the family a "domestic church," and the little church of the family takes its orientation from the faith and mission of the larger Church. It is a mother’s and a father’s responsibility to be with children at home and in church, and to pray together regularly. Children will learn the faith only when they are taught. The way a family responds to adversity, or gathers for meals, or makes financial decisions and sets priorities - these and many other aspects of "home economics" shape the values and identities of our children. "Love is our mission" because even in the middle of our humble daily routines, Catholics live with a bold and glorious purpose.

Lent

Scripture and Tradition - Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the holy season of Lent. On this day the foreheads of Catholics everywhere are smudged with dirty little crosses of ash, which is made from the previous year’s palm. The priest tells us "Remember man that thou art dust and unto dust thou shalt return." These ashes symbolize a whole variety of things such as worthlessness, sorrow, grief, penance, and a sign of affliction. Scripture makes mention of the Jews and early Christians wearing sackcloth and ashes as a sign of repentance. Ash Wednesday was established by Pope St. Gregory the Great (590 AD – 604 AD) as a day of fasting and abstinence. By the 11^th century the practice was universal for all the faithful.

While the season of Lent is not explicitly mentioned of Sacred Scripture, we can find a reasonable basis for it in Scripture. The number forty is symbolic for either or both purification and preparation. We look to the Flood where God purifies the world of evil. We see the Israelites wandering in the desert for forty years to purify them of their lack of faith to prepare them to enter the Promised Land. We read of Elijah fasting for 40 days before he is taken up to heaven. Most importantly, Christ goes into the desert to fast and pray before He begins His public ministry. Also, note that this fasting and prayer is followed by the three temptations of the devil.

Therefore, Lent has a Scriptural basis albeit not explicit. It is a time set aside by the Church for us to focus on what is truly important – our relationship with Our Blessed Lord. We examine our lives in relation to the example that Christ gives us. For He never asks us to do anything without showing us how to do it.

Lent is a time for us to grow in humility of heart. Humility of heart requires that we recognize our total dependence on God and be honest about our fault, our failings and our sins, mortal as well as venial. To be humble of heart requires that we be generous of heart. Very often when others rebuke us or point out our faults to us, we can tend to become defensive or make excuses. It is possible that they are incorrect; however, it is also possible that they are correct and we are blind to that fault. Humility of heart requires that we recognize that and take the criticism without insisting on our own defense.

Cautions: We need to be cautious of some tendencies in our human nature. First, how often have we made grandiose promises for Lent and within two weeks of Lent we are back where we were 5 weeks ago? Make your Lenten resolutions practical and doable. Write them down! Be accountable to yourself.

Secondly, be mindful of your motivation. It needs to be centered on Christ not your own self-love or pride. For example, fasting & dieting are two different things! Third, remember the necessity that we all have to purify ourselves constantly of our imperfections with the help of God’s grace. St. John of the Cross uses the image of a window that is dirty and is unable to be illuminated by the light of the sun. In contrast, a window that is clean not only permits light to illuminate it but seems to become light itself. One ceases to notice the window and sees only the brilliant blinding sun. This is what a pure soul looks like, for when Christ sees a soul that is free of mortal sin He fills it with His grace. The less a soul is tainted with venial sins the more radiant it becomes.

The Church has traditionally given us three things to help us grow in holiness and in humility of heart. They are called the three disciplines of Lent: prayer, fasting and almsgiving.

Prayer: God desires us to be good. Prayer is necessary because in asking God for help we show humility and He will give us all the grace we need to be good. Remember that Pope St. Peter did not pray at the Last Supper when Christ warned him that he would deny Christ thrice. Rather he boldly stated that he would never do any such thing and we can read about the result in the Gospels. We need to pray humbly. We also should pray in solitude. While communal prayer is good, it is also important that we be alone with God to pray as well. Remember that Our Lord often went alone to pray to the Father. He did not go far off but only a little ways off alone to pray. The season of Lent offers us a whole variety of opportunities to pray such as the Stations of the Cross, Rosary, Chaplets, Eucharistic adoration and Benediction. Some may even make a better effort to get to daily Mass for Lent. In addition, reading Scripture devoutly for at least 15 minutes gains us a partial indulgence. Let us also remember that our Lord sought his apostles’ prayers during the Agony in the Garden when He wrestled with the manifold temptations and the reality of what was to come. This is the origin of the holy hour. He must have felt great disappointment when His apostles continued to fall asleep on Him. St. Therese of the Child Jesus always wanted to be a missionary but she never left the convent, so instead she prayed for missionaries fervently. So also we must pray.

Fasting – Certainly we are required to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, but this is the absolute minimum. Why fast? St. Thomas Aquinas gives us three reasons. First, fasting checks the desires of the flesh. In giving up something that we are permitted to have we strengthen the will. This strengthening of the will makes it easier to resist temptation in things that we are not permitted to do. Coupled with prayer fasting is a powerful spiritual tool. The reality is that some sins cannot be overcome without a regimen of both prayer & fasting. Secondly, fasting makes it easier to contemplate higher things. It makes it easier to pray and it reminds us that we are more than our bodies but we are spiritual beings. The prophet Daniel received a revelation from God after having fasted for three weeks. Moses receives the Ten Commandments after spending 40 days on Mount Sinai in prayer and fasting. Elijah is taken up into heaven after fasting for 40 days. Thirdly, fasting makes satisfaction for sin. It is a legitimate form of penance that helps us to identify with the hungry and the poor; thereby helping us to grow in charity and in holiness. This identification should also discourage us from wasting food especially when we know others are hungry. Abstaining from meat is also required on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent under pain of mortal sin. Also, we are required to either abstain from meat or do some other act of penance on all the other Fridays of the year. This is in honor of the great sacrifice accomplished on Good Friday that sacrifice of the Son of God on the altar of the Cross for your sins and for mine. This intimate connection of Good Friday & the Sacrifice of the Cross needs to be maintained and remembered throughout the year. Abstaining from meat on all the Fridays of the year remind us of the Paschal sacrifice accomplished on Good Friday. Therefore, the only flesh that we should consume on Friday is that of the Son of God. St. Therese of the Child Jesus used to leave a ripe pear on her desk in the convent because she loved ripe pears, but she never ate it. She denied herself that as a sacrifice to God. The practice of giving up things during Lent is a very important form of fasting which is praiseworthy and is to be encouraged.

Almsgiving – The practice of giving money and of ourselves is a very important part of our Lenten season. We must be poor in spirit as the Beatitudes tell us. That is that we recognize everything we have is a gift from God and that we have an obligation to help others in need and to alleviate their suffering if we are able. This involves giving money to the Church and to charities. In addition, it calls us to do good works of charity. Based on the kind of work, the amount of work, and the motivation to do the work God will reward us. Doing charitable works oneself allows us to experience firsthand great reward. It can involve tutoring, visiting hospitals and nursing homes or helping at soup kitchens. The list of possibilities is endless.

Perhaps you can find five things that you will strive to do this Lent so that when the priest asks you in confession "How was your Lent?" you may answer in a positive way and grow in your relationship with God. Happy Lent.¹

Synod Consultation of Clergy & Faithful: The recent 2014 Synod of Bishops in Rome met to discuss the topic, The Pastoral Challenges of the Family in the Context of Evangelization, and issued a final document called the Relatio Synodi. This final document is the preparatory document or the Lineamenta for the next Synod of Bishops in Rome. This Synod will take place from October 4 to 25, 2015, with the topic, The Vocation and Mission of the Family in the Church and Contemporary World. Once again, as with the most recent Synod of Bishop, the Office of the Synod of Bishops invites a process of broad consultation among every component of the local Church, including academic institutions, organizations, lay movements and other ecclesial associations.
